Objective
Students will be able to define who the Mayans were and develop a better understanding of the Mayan civilization by learning about Mayan culture. Students will know the significance of the Mayan impact on the Americas by outlining key events in the Mayan timeline. Students will be able to interpret the influence of Mayan civilization on American societies. Students will be able to recognize Mayan art and architecture that has has remained in the modern world.

Monday
Lesson 1: Students will be introduced to Mayan civilization. Introduction will include examples of art, architecture, astronomical and mathematical concepts they used. A timeline will be used to establish important events and separate how Mayan civilization is categorized by modern historians. Mayan Empire Documentary in the Mayan Multimedia page will be shown, and questions for Assignment 1 are found in the Blog.

Tuesday
Lesson 1 Introduction continued: After reviewing and discussing timeline, first assignment is to be issued. Assignment 2: Students will list the 3 major time periods (before Spanish conquerors arrived in the 1600s) that Mayan civilization is categorized in, list at least two significant events that occurred in each, and how these events impacted modern American societies.

Wednesday
Lesson 2: A summary of the Mayan civilization (Rise and Fall of Mayan Civilization) will be reviewed. Students will get a more detailed look into Mayan works of art and science. These videos can be found on the Theme page. Assignment 3: After viewing the Mayan Art and Architecture video, students will choose one piece of Mayan art or architecture from the video to recreate using a variety of available materials. Available materials will include painting supplies, modeling clay, and other arts and crafts materials. We will discuss important works in these areas, such as their contributions to Astronomy and Mathematical concepts).

Thursday
Lesson 3: We will examine Mayan geography and how they were organized in the region that they resided in. We will look at what rituals and customs they performed in their daily lives. Examples will include work/labor duties, eating habits, family structure, and religious practices. We will be utilizing the links and videos posted on the Theme page.

Friday
Lesson 3: End of Mayan civilization. Discussions about how climate change and European colonial conquest contributed to Mayan dominance over their region will lead into the third assignment. Assignment 4: Based on the articles and video posted in the Mayans "Discussion/Questions" page, write one paragraph about why Mayan civilization declined and a second paragraph discussing what they could have done to slow down or prevent their decline. The Prezi will provide information and further information regarding this assignment.
